CAN Bus and LIN Bus Fault Finding for Technicians
Training Course Overview
This is a one day training course aimed at automotive technicians requiring information on dealing with
the CAN and LIN buses. Lunch is provided. It is a training session for candidates requiring in-depth
knowledge on the CAN and LIN use in vehicles and their diagnostics. Candidates will be armed with
information to help troubleshoot and repair CAN and LIN based vehicles. There is a Hands-on Lab session.
The agenda consists of:-
Introduction
- In-Vehicle Networking Integration - Why is it used?
- Basics of Networks
- Evolution of ECU integration
CAN Bus Overview
- Understanding the electrical signals - how to view on oscilloscope
- Understanding bit rates
- The content of a CAN message
- Message priority
- Wake up methods
- Gateway ECU's
- Recognition of CAN and other different digital signals (duty cycle and pulse width modulation)
- CAN Failures and fault finding
- CAN demonstration on bench based network using Jaguar Instrument Pack
CAN Signal Data Formats
- Understand how signals such as Engine Speed are encoded within CAN signal
- Understand CAN databases and differences between Intel and Motorola Formats
- Demonstration on a Ford vehicle including looking at the CAN bus during Key on, normal operation and key-off (i.e. ECUs going to sleep)
Local Interconnect Network (LIN)
- LIN applications - Why LIN?
- Understanding the electrical signals - how to view on oscilloscope
- The content of a LIN message
- LIN message types and schedules
- Understanding LIN versions used by different car manufacturers (e.g. LIN 1.0 to 1.3, 2.0 to 2.1, AUTOSAR and J2602)
- LIN failures and fault finding
Automotive Diagnostics and CAN
- J1962 Diagnostics Connector and CAN
- Brief Overview of context of CAN, K-Line, KWP2000 and UDS Protocols and Services in relation to CAN
- Diagnostic techniques and fault-finding with regards to CAN faults
- Diagnostic Trouble Codes (U-Codes) versus realtime network data
- CAN failure types and how this is detected
Hands-on Lab Exercises - Afternoon
Using laptops, real automotive ECUs, CAN/LIN analysers and fault code reader/diagnostics tool.
- Diagnostics1: Basic CAN analysis on CAN Analyser, building up a CAN database.
- Diagnostics2: Fault injection & Reading DTCs with CAN Analyser Fault reader plug-in. CAN Physical layer with Picoscope.
- Diagnostics3: Basic LIN analysis on LIN Analyser. LIN Physical layer with Picoscope.
